Stop revising what you already know.

Focal is a study app for high school students. It turns the questions you get wrong into targeted practice — add a struggle, get drilled on exactly that, and watch your weak topics turn green before the exam.

Drill · Question 3 of 8

How many moles are in 22 g of carbon dioxide (CO₂)?

A) 2.0 mol
B) 0.25 mol
C) 0.5 mol
D) 1.0 mol

Correct — molar mass of CO₂ is 44 g/mol, so 22 ÷ 44 = 0.5 mol.

Add a struggle. Drill it. Improve.

Most revision time goes on material you already understand, because it feels productive. Focal flips that around and spends your time where the marks are.

  1. 01

    Add a struggle

Type in a question you got wrong, name a topic that confuses you, paste your teacher's feedback, or snap a photo of a marked test. Focal works out the specific skill gap behind the mistake — not just the topic, but what exactly went wrong.

  2. 02

    Drill it

Focal writes fresh exam-style questions aimed at that gap: multiple choice, short answer and long-response questions like the ones on real past papers. Written answers are marked against a mark scheme, so you see which points you hit and which you missed.

  3. 03

    Watch it improve

Every topic sits on your weakness profile as red, amber or green. Score well in drills and it moves up; slip and it moves back. You always know what to revise next, and you stop wasting time on things you already know.

Everything you need to close the gaps

Weakness profile
One page that shows every topic you're working on across all your subjects, colour-coded by how well you actually know it — based on your drill results, not a guess.
Targeted drill sessions
Choose a subject and topic, or let Focal pick your weakest one. Pick a format — past-paper mix, multiple choice, short answer or long response — and 5 to 20 questions.
Photo upload
Take a picture of a marked test and Focal reads it, finds the questions you lost marks on, and adds them to your profile. It works on study notes and textbook pages too.
Mark my work
Photograph a handwritten answer or essay and get it marked against a mark scheme, with the points you earned, the points you missed and how to pick up the remaining marks.
Revision feed
A scrollable feed of quick question cards — multiple choice, true or false, fill the blank and key facts — drawn from your weakest topics. Good for ten spare minutes on the bus.
Ask Focal
Stuck on a concept? Ask a question in plain English and get a clear, step-by-step explanation pitched at high school level.
Grade forecaster
A Pro feature: enter your current grade, your target and how much your final exam is worth, and see what you need to score to get there.
Streaks and leaderboards
Earn XP for every drill, keep a daily study streak, and see how you rank against students at your school each week.

Built on how studying actually sticks

Practice testing beats re-reading. Answering questions forces you to pull information out of memory, which is what strengthens it. Re-reading notes feels familiar but builds much weaker recall. Every Focal session is active practice, never passive review.

Mistakes are the most useful thing you have. A wrong answer tells you exactly where your understanding breaks down. Focal keeps each mistake, identifies the skill behind it and keeps testing that skill — so the same error doesn't cost you marks twice.

Spacing and variety help. Coming back to a weak topic across several days, with differently worded questions each time, builds understanding you can use on an unfamiliar exam question — not just memory of one example.

Questions students ask

Is Focal free?

Yes. The free plan includes 20 drill questions a week, up to 3 active topics on your weakness profile and 10 revision feed cards a day. Focal Pro is $7.99 a month, with a 7-day free trial, and removes those limits and unlocks photo upload, AI marking of your written work and the grade forecaster.

Which subjects and courses does it work for?

Any subject where you answer exam questions — maths and the sciences, essay subjects like English and history, languages and more. Questions are written for high school level, and you can paste a mark scheme or teacher feedback so practice matches your course.

Where do the questions come from?

Focal uses AI (Anthropic's Claude) to write new practice questions aimed at the exact mistake you added, and to mark written answers against a mark scheme. Because the questions are generated for you, you never run out of practice on a topic.

Are the answers always right?

Focal is built to solve each question before writing the answer options, so the marked answer and the explanation agree — but AI can still make mistakes. If something looks wrong, check it with your teacher or textbook. You can also override a marking decision in a drill if you think you deserved the mark.

How is this different from flashcards or past papers?

Flashcards test what you already wrote down, and past papers test everything at once. Focal starts from what you got wrong and keeps generating practice on that specific gap until your results show you've got it — then moves on.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Focal runs in your browser on phones, tablets and computers — there is nothing to install. On a laptop you can also scan a QR code to take a photo of your work with your phone.
